Scenes From The World Interiors Holiday Tablescaping Workshop

(Traditional design on our San Antonio Rose Round Dining Table)
World Interiors was happy to host a Holiday Tablescaping Workshop lead by Nycia Emerson of Inspired Events & Designs.  Our morning crowd learned some quick and easy holiday decorating tips from Nycia while sipping on mimosas . . . and several even got in some Christmas shopping while they were in our store!  It was a great opportunity for us to showcase some of our amazing solid wood dining tables as well as our collection of unique holiday decor . . . several pieces of which Nycia incorporated into her stellar designs.

Thanks to C. Thompson Photography for the great shots of the event.  (More photos after the jump)

World Interiors Helps Welcome The World to Austin for F1 Weekend!

Anyone who lives in or near Austin knows that a HUGE topic of conversation lately has been the brand new Formula 1 track here in the town . . . the first of its kind in the United States.  So when World Interiors was recently approached by Charlie Bravo Charter about furnishing the VIP hospitality/waiting areas for their helicopter shuttle flights taking visitors from various locations around town to the Circuit of Americas track, we were obviously thrilled to accept!

Waiting area @ the Embassy Suites Downtown/Town Lake
Knowing that the majority of those using the shuttles would be out-of-town guests (with a large percentage of those being international guests), we wanted to be sure to set up spaces that truly reflected what World Interiors is all about . . . from global influences right back to our proud Austin roots!  So we opted for an eclectic mix of map fabrics, vintage-inspired globes & travel pillows, western themed accessories, cowhides, cigar leather, and our ever-popular Austin Destinations Typography Art! Not to mention grounding the space with some of our tried and true solid wood accent furniture with a little touch of the industrial.  And can you have a true Texas space without at least a few pops of orange to brighten things up?

Our New South Austin Showroom!

We hope you'll forgive us for our shameful lack of posting these last couple of months.  To say that our move out of The Domain and into our NEW, larger showroom in south Austin has been hectic would be a slight understatement!  Nevertheless, we've been settled into our new 78744 digs for just about a month now, and we're ready to show it off with lots of pics.  Enjoy!

Extinct Furniture?

Just read an interesting article on Stylist Home entitled "DECORATING TRENDS: 7 FURNITURE PIECES AND HOME ACCESSORIES THAT ARE GOING 'EXTINCT'".  And while I absolutely agree that landline phones in homes will soon be a thing of the past, that love seats have been on the decline for a while now, and that tablecloths are best reserved for holidays and special occasions, I'm not quite sure what to think about some of the other suggestions.

Who but the most space-challenged individuals go without at least one night stand in the bedroom?  And while they may not be as popular as they once were, do we really think that sideboards and coffee tables are ever going to go away?  Sure, there's a practical argument for replacing the traditional coffee table with an ottoman for extra seating or a trunk for extra storage . . . but why not kill two or even three birds with one stone by choosing a solid wood storage coffee table that offers drawers for stashing away toys, books, or whatever you want to conceal and is more than durable enough to withstand being sat on when you have a house full of guests?  Of course, I should admit that I have an old factory cart similar to this that I personally use in my living room . . . but just because it's not a traditional coffee table, does that really make it any less one based on its current function?

Article author Brie Dyas also argues that it's hard to find sideboard options in stores these days . . .but with over 30 options for sideboards/buffets here @ World Interiors alone, I'm not so sure about that. I personally think the only argument for NOT placing a sideboard in a traditional dining room should be a lack of space.  Sideboards are great for tucking away extra dishes, cutlery, and everything else you may need in a dining space . . . not to mention board games, bar accessories, or whatever else!  But that's just my opinion!  I guess only time will tell if these predictions on furniture extinction will actually come true!

After nearly two years in the Domain, we at World Interiors have decided to move to a larger showroom in south Austin where we can display even more of our beautiful, heirloom-quality solid wood furniture!  And rather than move all of our current inventory, we will be selling most of it off of the floor at deeply-discounted prices.  If you're in the market for high-quality furniture and unique accessories, this is a GREAT time to stock up!  Quantities are limited, so hurry in for the best selection now through late March!

Why Mango Wood?

Did you know that approximately 70% of our solid wood furniture offerings here at World Interiors are constructed from Mango wood? The manufacturer of our solid wood furniture has pioneered the use of Mango wood for furniture production. As a founding member of the Sustainable Furnishings Council, they were interested in identifying a wood that had the beauty and durability of an exotic tropical hardwood, while at the same time being an ecologically renewable resource.

Mango wood is ideally suited for furniture in that it has a density and hardness similar to that of Cherry or Walnut.  As the most common fruit tree in the world, Mango trees are constantly being replanted for their food crops.  Once trees have stopped bearing fruit, they are harvested for their lumber.  Then new, younger trees are replanted in their place to ensure a self-sustaining ecological cycle and to reduce our carbon footprint.

Once harvested, our Mango wood is then finished using eco-safe techniques and finishes that are water-based instead of the typical high-VOC, oil based finishes used by so many others.  These water-based finishes create both a healthier work environment for our furniture artisans and a cleaner Earth with reduced global warming.  Additionally, this ensures less chemicals in the air of our customers' homes!

So make the smart, eco-friendly choice and add some beautiful solid Mango wood furniture from World Interiors to your home today!

Why Shopping Local Matters

World Interiors is very proud to be an Austin-based and Austin-owned business. We LOVE our community, and we're very happy to be part of the Go Local Austin network.

Did you know that dollars spent in locally-owned businesses have THREE TIMES the impact on your community as dollars spent at national chains? When shopping locally, you simultaneously create jobs, fund more city services through sales tax, invest in neighborhood improvement, and promote community development.  When you buy furniture from World Interiors, you are actually supporting TWO local businesses since the manufacturer of our amazing SOLID WOOD furniture is also Austin-based and locally owned.

And if all of that wasn't enough, we give you an added incentive to "go local" by offering a 15% discount off of ALL regular price furniture in our assortment!  It's truly a win-win-win situation.

How We Do It: Round Table Top Construction

Our Java Dining Tables are definite show pieces thanks to their warm espresso premium finish featuring a feathered patina created by a seven-step lacquering process.

But these tables are every bit as durable as they are beautiful.  The lacquering process ensures that the table can withstand daily use without the worry of moisture rings, and our manufacturer's construction techniques ensure that every single solid wood item is made with the highest degree of craftsmanship using time-honored techniques.

And here's a step-by-step of just how they do it:

Why Buy Real SOLID WOOD Furniture?

Solid wood furniture from World Interiors is strong enough to last families for generations.  It resists scratches and dents far better than the veneered products you find at our competitors.  Solid woods retain their beauty longer, but there are definitely some things to keep in mind when purchasing solid wood furniture.

Solid wood is a natural material, and variations in grain and color . . . as well as the presence of knots, small cracks, and mineral deposits . . . are to be expected. Sometimes filler or a wood patch is required, and one of our manufacturer's expert craftsmen will make these corrections to prevent wasting the valuable wood. These character marks are often either concealed and/or incorporated in the natural distressing of the product.

These natural characteristics do not interfere with the structural integrity of the piece, but instead give each piece its unique character.

Additionally, changes in climate and weather may cause solid wood furniture to "move". This is natural.  Our manufacturer employs construction and finishing techniques (like floating panels and tabletops) to minimize the effects of this movement by allowing the wood to expand and contract naturally. Seasonal cracks and splits, while not common with our products, may open from time to time, but these are considered normal if not excessive, and can usually be easily repaired. And these can be kept to a minimum by avoiding exposure to extreme elements such as temperature, moisture, or prolonged sunlight.
